Management and Practice of Large-Scale Modern Coal Enterprises

An Wang

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2014, Volume 1, Issue 1,   Pages 13-17 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2014004

Abstract: As the coal-dominated energy structure will remain unchanged in the short term, the sustainable development of the coal industry is still serving as one of the foundations for the sound development of the national economy. The construction of modernized mines based on "four orientations", that is, orientations of scale production, modern technology and equipment, informationized management and professional working team, has been rapidly enhancing its development in the recent decade. However, in the next decade or an even longer period, the industry, with the energy centre shifting to the West of China, will be exposed to new options and development in the layout, structure, model, technology, etc.

Circumcision of preschool boys in Baghdad, Iraq: prevalence, current practice and complications

Hussein Naji, Rajaa Mustafa

Frontiers of Medicine 2013, Volume 7, Issue 1,   Pages 122-125 doi: 10.1007/s11684-013-0242-x

Abstract:

Circumcision is probably one of the most ancient surgical operations and has been performed more than any other operation. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of circumcision in preschool boys and to present an overview of the current practices and complications in Baghdad, Iraq. A statistical survey was conducted at the Central Teaching Hospital for Children in Baghdad, Iraq during the period April 2003 to October 2004. The survey consisted of structured interviews with the accompanying parents while waiting for their children’s routine appointments. A total of 4000 boys were included. 2 443 (61%) were circumcised and the prevalence of circumcision increased from 18% at 6 months of age to reach 92% at 6 years. Only 180 (7.4%) boys had a medical reason while the rest were circumcised for religious reasons. Parents were the only determinant in deciding the time and place of religious circumcision. Circumcision was performed by a doctor in 732 (30%) boys, by a nurse in 1276 (52%) and by a traditional circumciser in 435 (18%). Post-operative complications were encountered in 209 (8.5%) boys. Circumcision is an important surgical procedure that should be performed by trained medical staff in medical institutions. Circumcision performed by medical professionals caused significantly less complications.

New practice in semaglutide on type-2 diabetes and obesity: clinical evidence and expectation

Frontiers of Medicine 2022, Volume 16, Issue 1,   Pages 17-24 doi: 10.1007/s11684-021-0873-2

Abstract: Obesity is an important risk factor of type 2 diabetes (T2D), which has become an important factor threatening human health. However, no perfect drug choice for obesity exists. Semaglutide is a kind of human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analog that promotes insulin secretion while inhibiting glucagon secretion through a glucose concentration-dependent mechanism. GLP-1 can also delay stomach emptying and suppress appetite to help lose weight. This review summarizes clinical evidence of the semaglutide effect on T2D and obesity and establishes expectations on future clinical trials for obesity treatment.

Technology innovation and practice on Shenhua heavy haul railway

Xue Jilian

Strategic Study of CAE 2011, Volume 13, Issue 8,   Pages 43-49

Abstract:

Shenhua heavy haul railway engineering based on its own actual needs, committed to research and develop whole sets of heavy haul railway technology, and focused on launching engineering technology innovation mainly about three aspects: the railway engineering construction technology, heavy-load transportation technology, construction and operation management technology. Series of technology innovation impelled Shenhua Group to master the core technology of overloaded railway as soon as possible, promoted enterprise’s development, and remarkable social benefits and economic benefits had been achieved as well. Shenhua group oriented system for heavy haul railway technological innovation, in which enterprises played the leading role, aiming at market demands, and combined the efforts of enterprises, universities and research institutes, and pursued scientific research project by engineering means.

Study and practice on condition-based maintenance of induced fans in coal-fired power plants

CHEN Gang, LI Bing, CHEN Fei, HUANG Shuhong

Frontiers in Energy 2008, Volume 2, Issue 2,   Pages 211-215 doi: 10.1007/s11708-008-0028-z

Abstract: Reducing the enormous maintenance cost is essential to enhance the competitiveness for power plants. An overall design scheme for condition-based maintenance of induced fans is proposed for large thermal power plants. The interface of the above framework is simple and convenient; the optimum maintenance strategy is given by condition monitoring and risk evaluating. The decision-supported system was used in Guangdong Shajiao C Power Plant. The results show that it is a feasible maintenance optimization scheme for power plants.

Yongkai ZHOU, Hongfeng CHAI

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2017, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 127-137 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2017011

Abstract: The popularization of the mobile internet has given rise to demand for flexible and convenient payment methods. For China, it is necessary to keep pace with or even lead the trend of innovation and development in the age of mobile payment. From the perspective of systems engineering, this paper introduces research and implementation of China UnionPay’s mobile payment project. The general requirements and core engineering problems of the mobile payment project are summarized based on analyses of the characteristics and engineering difficulties of this project. Integration of innovative technologies is introduced to resolve the contradiction between ease-of-use and security. A rapid iterative development process is adopted to improve the product release efficiency as well as the users' experience. The launch of the mobile payment project also opens the window to coordinating and upgrading the whole payment industry chains.

State of Practice of Construction Site Safety in the USA

Fei Dai,Yoojung Yoon,Hota V. GangaRao

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2016, Volume 3, Issue 3,   Pages 275-282 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2016035

Abstract: The construction industry has long been plagued with a high number of fatalities in the USA. Much safety improvements have been made after the USA Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act in 1970. However, this industry still suffers from a disproportionately high rate of work-related fatalities in comparison to other industries. To provide a holistic view of current construction safety practices and corresponding performance, this paper reviews statistics of construction fatalities and their causes. It then presents efforts led to prevent work-related accidents and injuries by the federal safety agencies and the industry. Additionally, advantages and limitations of current practices in terms of construction safety have been discussed along with promotion of aspects in construction work environment.
